CHRISTIAN MOSAIC ART BY SUE KERSHAW

Looking up at the vast, glittering gold Byzantine mosaics of the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy, I knew I had finally discovered my 'thing' and I returned home happily obsessed with discovering the art and techniques of these anonymous great mosaicists; spurred on by further travel across Europe and beyond to explore many more fine examples across the ages in our places of worship.

I have been creating mosaics since 2007, in a full-time professional capacity since 2010, and have been very fortunate to have found a medium which allows me to create alone and with others; undertaking public and private commissions, and community projects.
My North Yorkshire home studio is in the picturesque, historic village of Sheriff Hutton (known for Richard III's ruinous castle) though my artwork has taken place across the UK.

I have facilitated Christian mosaic projects with congregations, communities, health-related groups and primary schools for a variety of settings.

Mosaic clients have included churches, schools (over 100), hospitals, councils (borough, city and town) and charities (for example, Mind, Macmillan Cancer Support, British Heart Foundation, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, Action for Children and Action for Blind People).

My ‘cartoons’, the term used for the basis of all mosaic designs, in essence simple pencil line drawings, are often inspired whilst looking beyond at the sky, trees or birds feeding at hangers in the garden or flying further afield.

Then, the joy of sifting through the huge choice of available materials including my favourite French matt unglazed porcelain, very similar to the natural stone colours of Roman mosaics, combined and highlighted with vibrant stained, foiled and smalti glass providing a contemporary twist.

I prefer to surround myself with all the materials in colours I might include in a piece before making a final selection which evolves as I work.

Each mosaic is produced with hundreds, often thousands, of hand-cut tesserae. I take particular pleasure in the physical creation and arrangement of tesserae that flow harmoniously throughout the work, providing ‘andamento’ - movement, which brings the mosaic alive.

I am a Professional Member of the British Association for Modern Mosaic.
